How to make a stool...

I have been working on an architectural project in Dalsland Sweden, converting a huge grain silo into a hotel and venue. The building is over 100 years old and constructed from timber and concrete. There are 12 x 8m high silos  constructed from stacked wooden beams which we have cut into, creating a series of new living spaces.

I wanted to design and make as much of the interior fittings myself given the unique nature of the project. I designed all the tables and chairs as simply as possible to make them almost invisible against the walls of the silos.

I used a Festool Domino machine and Domino dowelling system in the construction of the stools and use locally sourced birch in the frame construction with a stained plywood top. I then hacked ten stools and turned them into  chairs by cutting a wedge out of the inside back legs and gluing it to the back side shifting the chairs centre of gravity. The metal work was made by hand and eye using simple jigs and tools.
